EXPERIENCE:

 

            President, Phi Sigma Biological Sciences Honor Society, 2002 to date. (Executive Director 2000-2002, Executive Secretary-Treasurer 1998-2000). Achievements included developing a national web-site and the creation of a Student Travel Grant Program to assist students in presenting research results and professional meetings. Member society representative to the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS) and the American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS), and affiliate representative to the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

 

            Associate Professor of Botany, Eastern Illinois University, 1997 to date. Co-established the EIU Endangered Plant Species Research Program. Service includes election as the Botany Division Chair for the Illinois State Academy of Science, the EIU Judicial Board, and EIU Admissions Review committee. Granted tenure 8/00.

 

            Assistant Professor of Botany, Eastern Illinois University, 1994-97. Research focused on the use of plant tissue culture for propagation, preservation, and genetic improvement. Service included Chairing the department’s Botany Graduate Student Research Fund Committee and Curriculum Committee, and serving on the departmental Personnel Committee and Library Committee.

 

Postdoctoral Research Associate, Ohio State University-OARDC, 1990-94. Primary research area focused on the genetic improvement of strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa) via tissue culture techniques. Research funded by The Ohio State University, The J.M. Smucker Co., and Ohio's Thomas Edison Foundation.

 

            Assistant Staff Scientist/Collection Manager, American Type-Culture Collection, Rockville, MD, 1988-90. Responsibilities included complete management of ATCC's plant tissue culture collection and operation of a research program in long-term preservation methods for plant materials.

 

            Visiting Scientist, Agriculture Canada, Fredericton, New Brunswick, 1987-88. Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada Visiting Postdoctoral Fellow in Biotechnology. Investigated cultural and genotypic factors which may induce somatic embryogenesis in potato (Solanum tuberosum) cultivars and related species, for use in synthetic seed technologies.

            BIO 1001 - Biological Principles and Issues  (2-2-3) - The course emphasizes the principles of biology as well as introduces the student to the thought processes and methods used by biologists. For students not planning a career in the biological sciences.

            BOT 1010 - General Botany (3-2-4) - An introduction to the study of bacteria, fungi, algae, bryophytes, and vascular plants. The phylogenetic relationships of these diverse groups will be investigated through comparative morphology and physiology.

            BOT 1050 - The Plant World (2-2-3) - The course emphasizes botanical principles and introduces the student to the thought processes and methods used by plant scientists. For students not planning a career in the biological sciences.

            BOT 1090 - The Plant World, Honors (2-2-3) - Prerequisite: Admission to the University Honors Program.

            BIO 1100 - General Biology (3-3-4) - Introductory biology for students majoring in the biological sciences.

            BIO 3001 – Heredity & Society (2-0-2) – A course for non-science majors that addresses the ethical, political, and social implications of heredity and modern genetic technology. Basic genetic principles as well as contemporary issues in biotechnology will be studied.

BIO 3200 - Genetics (3-2-4) - The fundamental principles of genetics (classical, molecular, and population) stressing applications to all organisms.

            BIO 3450 - Independent Study (arr-arr-1 to 3) - Individual study on a topic in biology selected by the student under the supervision of an instructor.

            BIO 3451 - Undergraduate Research (arr-arr-1 to 3) - Original research in biological sciences conducted in consultation with a faculty mentor. Students will conduct a research project using current scientific protocols. Hypothesis formation, bench work, data collection/analyis become the responsibility of each student. Written report required.

            BIO 3510 - Plant Physiology (2-4-4) - The study of water relations, mineral nutrition, phytohormones, photosynthesis, respiration and physiological ecology.

            EIU 4011 - Plants and Civilization (2-0-2) - A study of the interdependent relationships that have occurred between human populations and groups of plants during the evolution of our society. Particular attention will be given to contemporary problems dealing with agriculture.

            BOT 4902 - Plant Breeding (3-0-3) - Introduction to the basic principles and practices of plant breeding and methods for germplasm conservation. Emphasis is placed on both traditional and biotechnological approaches.

            BOT 5030 - Plant Physiology for Teachers (3) - A study of the principle functional mechanisms and their interrelationships in the living plant. Topics include: plant metabolism, organic and inorganic plant nutrition, and plant behavior. Hands-on laboratory exercises are emphasized.

            BIO 5140 - Genetics and Evolution for Teachers (3) - The fundamental principles of genetics (classical, molecular, population) and the relationship of genetics to the theory of evolution by natural selection. A diversity of laboratory exercises will be designed to illustrate genetic concepts basic to both animal and plant forms.

            BIO 5150 - Graduate Seminar (2-0-1) - Seminar in current biological sciences literature. Required of all biological sciences graduate students.

            BOT 5222 - Plant Breeding and Cytotaxonomy (3-0-3) - The structure and function of chromosomes and their relationship to the practice of modern day plant breeding techniques.

            BIO 5232 - Plant Cell and Tissue Culture (2-3-3) - Techniques in the initiation, propagation, maintenance, preservation, and genetic improvement of plant cells, tissues, and organs in vitro.
